It is important to protect yourself from the sun’s ultraviolet rays. Ultraviolet light contributes to skin cancer and skin aging. Ultraviolet-B (UVB) causes sunburns. Ultraviolet-A (UVA) causes wrinkled skin and has been linked to melanoma.
Sunscreen
- Pick a sunscreen with the label “broad-spectrum” which has a sun protection factor (SPF) of at least 30 and with UVA/UVB protection (SPF is a measure of UVB protection).
- Try a sunscreen with different chemicals if your skin reacts badly to the one that you are using. Not all sunscreens have the same ingredients.
- Be aware that more expensive does not mean better. Although a costly brand might feel or smell better, it is not necessarily more effective than a cheaper product.
When To Apply Sunscreen
- Apply sunscreen approximately 30 minutes before being in the sun (for best results) so that it can be absorbed by the skin and less likely to wash off when you perspire.
- Remember to reapply sunscreen at least every 2 hours and after swimming or strenuous exercise, even if “waterproof”.
How To Apply Sunscreen
- Be sure to apply enough sunscreen. As a rule of thumb, use an ounce (a handful) to cover your entire body
- Be careful when applying sunscreen around the eyes. You may want to use a “Baby” sunscreen around the eyes as these tend to sting less.
Avoid Direct Sun Exposure
- Avoid the peak hours of sun, 10:00 am – 4:00 pm.
- Do not sunbathe or use tanning booths.
- Wear sun protection clothing, such as a wide-brimmed hat, long sleeves, and pants when possible.
Monthly Self Check instructions
- On the first day of the month have your calendar remind you to do a monthly skin check.
- In about 30 seconds allow your eyes to glance at your entire skin’s surface. Don’t obsess, just look.
- Use a hand mirror to quickly check in difficult-to-see areas.
- Contact your dermatologist if you see anything that looks dramatically different than it did the previous month or if you notice something that continues to change over several months.
